In this presentation, we will discuss topics from the enigmatic marks of Otzi the “Iceman” to the elaborate zoomorphic ornamentation of the Siberian “Ice Princess”, the mysterious marks on the mummified “bruja” of ancient Peru to the erotically adorned priestesses and “Brides of the Dead” of ancient Egypt, the tattoo has always held a certain mystique. The process of etching something permanent into human flesh and the designs themselves have always been subjects of intrigue, taboo, and fear. There is a whole spiritual history of the tattoo that survives to this day that most of society still has yet to acknowledge, despite the thousands of earth’s inhabitants that sport one of these permanent marks.

This presentation will have a brief historical overview of sacred tattooing around the world and a look into contemporary practices and applications. We’ll discuss how modern-day practitioners of the ancient art continue to utilize tattooing to help others in their intense, personal, magickal transformations and initiations, how the tattoo has played an essential part in societal and spiritual rituals in almost every culture and civilization throughout history, and how the sanctity of this art form is alive and flourishing in the 21st century. We’ll touch upon various methods and ritual constructs of modern magickal tattooing and hear some examples of their powerful effects. We will see how “decorating thy temple”- of the spirit, is a truly magickal act.
